One of the assignments that seems to be a big fave of art school classes is the self-portrait. I get to do this at least once and sometimes twice per semester. Here is the first one I did, in an introductory digital imaging class. Since this was the first project we did, mine is rather simplistic – all I did was take a photo of myself in a mirror and superimpose it with some of my own favorite photos. We had to have logical transitions in the movie, so I just layered one photo with the next for the transition stage. The images were done in Photoshop, and then everything was loaded into iPhoto to export as a movie – about as simple as it gets.

Well it might be a simple concept, but not many people can take such good photos, much less layer them in such a visually arresting manner. I watched it twice because it was so interesting. How was it received by your class? And I’m also curious, do you use photoshop to develop the layers of imagery in your quilts? I can see things that remind me of them in this self portrait.
Thanks for posting this!
WOW!
This particular class was rather quiet; people didn’t speak up much. They all seemed rather self conscious. The whole effect was magnified by a teacher who was herself quiet and wasn’t ever able to get people jazzed up. As you can imagine, critiques in that class were deadly.
I don’t develop ideas for my quilts in Photoshop. My painting work is done spontaneously and not planned much in advance except for an occasional sketch to begin which then ends up being not too close to the final product. But I do tend to go for the layered effect in both painted and digital works. I hadn’t thought much about that before, but I guess my brain just works that way.
Simple but I loved it – it’s definitely you. At least the you I know. Even recognized a few of those images (maybe!)
