P.S.: I'm totally out of it. A presser foot is what holds the cloth down. I meant pedal. Oops!

Deidre:

As the son of a home-economics teacher, and someone adept at the Singer.....I've always preferred a knee control to a presser foot. They are MUCH more sensitive to subtle differences in power increase.

Of course I don't know if the Juki uses a knee mechanism, but if you've never tried it, maybe that will solve the problem of the tortoise versus the hare.

Nonetheless, I'm glad you're quilting again. I know the word has negative connotations, but I think there's nothing wrong with it. :)

Thanks, Jill and Dianna. Funny how we get so attached to our machines, no?

A harp? Well, that's certainly not something I've heard before. But how poetic! I don't think I'll forget that now.

Yes, somewhat sheepishly, I have to admit that the 5500 is too fast for me. The machine has a slider that goes from turtle to rabbit, and I had to put it kind of in the middle, or it gets away from me.

Feels kind of like coming home, doesn't it? The word for the center of the machine is "harp" - and I know what you mean. I sewed on a Bernina 160 for years, then had a longarm (which I loved) but had to sell it (long story). Quilting on a home machine just about did me in, then I discovered my Janome 1600 - kind of a smaller "home" version of your Juki Industrial. Wow - 5500 spm?? I thought 1600 was a lot. Enjoy - it will bring you many years of productive happiness, I'm sure. Aloha!

Glad to see you are back playing with fiber! I know exactly what you mean about your 'old friend' -- I have a Juki too and when I am away from it to do zigzag or other decorative things I sure wish someone made a machine as solid as this one to do those kinds of stitches. Looking forward to seeing your future projects.
