Deidre, this is a great post. You are such a thoughtful and honest writer, and knowing how busy you are, I greatly appreciate that you took the time to offer rich insight into the book and into your own artistic perspective. Thank you.
Mentioned you to a quilt artist here in Houston and their response was -- "Oh, her work is so amazing." And I agree! Talk to you soon. Lainie

Deidre-I want to echo some of the comments above. Your sharing of your paper made me go find my much read copy and reread my favorite parts. I find this book reassuring. On good days I remember that making art is about my process and not the end product so much. It's about trusting that the last piece I finished will lead me to the next one.
This book helps me try and cut down on all that internal negative self doubt tho I'm not nearly as successful at that as I'd like!

Thanks, everyone, for the great comments. Regina, you express some thoughts similar to what I've thought of on occasion, about how there is already so much out there. Part II of the book addresses that as well and has some good insights. I'm writing a Part II right now and will put that up soon. Thank you so much for the kind words about my work!

Deidre - thanks for the abbreviated version of each chapter of this book and for your totally honest remark "seriously, can you believe I had never read it" - I think that your art totally reflects your honesty and is so recognizable as you - that's what I love about it. Time to go buy the book.

Hi Deirdre,

Yesterday I noticed your paper on this book and had no time to read it, but this morning it was my first action. Much of what you wrote (and what this book is about I understand)I recognize, the doubts especially, which are only being added to if you see what already is being made and has been made by so many artists all over the world. It sometimes makes me think: what else do we need, everything is there already, such flooding of creativity and artistic products. And yet, then there is that splendid idea, that inspiration to do it slightly different, in your original way. Especially the conclusion seemed so true to me: we just have to work on, explore on, because as artists that is our life, we can not do without, at least that is it for me. And as far as your art is concerned: your work is terrific! As I wrote (in a blogpost after visiting MAdrid this summer)I recognized your work immediately amongst all other art in the very chockful Johnson Gallery there. To me you already seem to have found your own style, but of course your doubts might be about how to proceed in the future etc... Anyhow, I loved reading this post and want to thank you for sharing it.

Deidre- Your commentary made me go pull the book off the shelf, and thumbing through my copy, noticing all the highlighted areas, has made it must reread.

I enjoyed and related to your words and am looking forward to reading it all again. Thanks. ~Rose

Deidre,

Good insights! I find something new in this book every time I pick it up. I strongly recommend it to all of my art quilt students on their first day with me. It's sort of like a big Nike ad for artists: Just do it. Thanks for writing about it.
