Judy, I think you probably are working in a series. From what I see in your work, there is a definite voice coming through; even though you are trying different mediums, it is all related and I can tell it comes from the same person. The idea is that it is a progression, as you point out, and not just a random flitting from one thing to the next. It's your desire to try new things that keeps the work fresh.

I've always felt kind of squeamish about the word "craft" because some people have such negative connotations about it. My own feeling is that so-called "craft" forms like quilts or ceramics, etc., are very much "art" if the right kind of intent is behind it. On the other hand, a painting can also be not so much "art" if done by rote formula or without proper attention.

Deidre, thanks for the excellent synopsis. That book could be a great book to discuss with a group, the section on art vs craft for one brings up all kinds of things for me, with the authors definition of the two. For how long has that issue been bashed around the textile world? lol

The idea of work that continues with little change being considered craft, brings to my mind the whole concept of working in a series that seems to be so important to many in the art world. I have never been drawn much to the idea of working in a series and it might be hard to separate it from craft when thinking of it in that context. I see a progression of certain ideas or themes in my work, but I have never wanted to sit down and work in a series, I always want to try out something new. But I know there is value in exploring an idea, so it is an interesting concept to think about, where does one draw the line between the two. Can one's art devolve into craft? interesting thing to think about.

thanks for posting on FB today to bring me over to your blog. I really like the 24" pieces you are doing, the stitches on some of them really add a nice layer of tactile texture to the colorful abstract imagery layers.

Deidre thanks for posting this...Art & Fear is probably one of my favorite books because it confirms so many things for me and reminds me that I'm not the only one feeling them. I need to look through it again...
