Gerrie, I'd love to see that play, wonder if it'll ever have another run. Used Paint also mentions it. The author, Suzanne Hudson, describes how in the play one of the friends draws "a little skier with a woolly hat" on the white painting. She says, "A physical act of vandalism counters the affective trauma that the work enacts by loosening the definitions of modern art and ... identifying the cultural elites that validate it and buy it" (Hudson, 3).

The same concerns can also apply to Rauschenberg's White Paintings (http://www.sfmoma.org/explore/multimedia/audio/aop_tour_404), although Hudson says it's a mistake to compare these with anything Ryman was doing.

There's a movie I love that also questions the pretentions of the art world. It's called "Untitled." It's on Netflix.

This reminds me of the play "Art" which we saw on Broadway:

From Wikipedia:
The comedy, which raises questions about art and friendship, concerns three long-time friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan. Serge, indulging his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive, completely white painting. Marc is horrified, and their relationship suffers considerable strain as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes "art".

One of my all time favorite plays.

Hi Deidra! We met at the Visions show in Oceanside way back in 2010. We spoke briefly outside the museum and you encouraged me to keep in touch. While I frequently stop by your blog and come away totally inspired, I don't think that qualifies as keeping in touch—especially since I haven't left comments to let you know I've visited!

You asked about using your art for the greater good, and this immediately came to my mind: You could donate pieces of your art to organizations you want to support so they could auction or sell them to raise funds. Now with the Internet, both the organization and your art can reach a far wider audience than was ever possible before. Just something to consider...

By the way, your observations on the last few weeks of 2011 were so accurate—by the time I got to the Red Solos Cup, I was laughing out loud (though I could have just as easily cried at the truth and sadness of it all.)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your art—both touch just the right places in my heart!

Thanks, everyone. Gerrie, looking forward to seeing what you do with your white on white piece. Monique, I've been partial to that photo for a long time. It's not really a "white" image, but the writing is white, and I'll use any excuse to post it because I love it so much!

Beautiful photos. My fav is the last row, middle pic. Not sure why the white and black/gray is attractive to me but it's pretty in its simplicity.

Interesting. We have no snow in Portland, but I have been thinking about how to do a white on white textile piece. I guess it is good to remember that white has lots of shades!

I have loved following the evolution of this quilt and am in awe of your vision -- being able to see how the disparate bits and bobs would be unified by your painting and your intent. Thanks so much for all the work it took to post all these details to share with those of us who enjoy reading your blog. Here's wishing you another great artistic year.

Ah yes, I've admired these before.
Lovely work Deidre. That is why I asked you to be in my up and coming book!
We have some similarities in our work
which just might explain why I am so drawn to yours!
But it took a friend of mine to point that out to me. So funny.

My very best to you for this new year!
